Good to know

📍 Meet at the Takamaka Léman base in Féternes, near Thonon-les-Bains: a shuttle of about 10 minutes then takes you to the put-in on the Dranse.
⏱️ Allow around 2 hours in total, including 1 to 1 hour 15 on the water, with departures at 9am, 11am, 1pm or 3pm.
👥 The activity is open from age 14 (depending on water levels) to anyone who can swim, is in good health and fairly sporty: here, you’re the one steering the boat.
🦺 We lend you a wetsuit, neoprene boots, life jacket, helmet and paddle, so just bring swimwear and a towel.
🚿 Changing rooms, toilets, a big car park and a picnic area are waiting for you at the base.
📅 The season runs from early May to late September.
📸 Photos and videos of your descent are available as an extra, on site.
⚠️ Not recommended for pregnant women, people with a medical condition or older people.
🚗 Activity shuttles are included, but getting to the base is up to you.

How the activity works

1

🏁 Welcome.

At the base, your guide runs through how the trip will go. Then it’s off to the changing rooms to pull on your wetsuit, boots, life jacket and helmet.
2

🚌 Shuttle up.

A shuttle of about 10 minutes drops you at the put-in. Enjoy the scenery while the first tips begin.
3

🎓 Get briefed.

Getting into the canoe raft, paddling technique, reading the river, safety rules and what to do if you fall in: it’s all covered before you set off.
4

🌊 Hit the water.

Side by side in your little raft, you spend 1 to 1 hour 15 on the Dranse with your guide close by, all the way back to the base. Then change and unwind in the picnic area.

Why choose Takamaka ?

🏔️ Takamaka brings 30 years of experience in white water and mountain sports, and the Takamaka Léman team puts that know-how to work on the Dranse.
🛶 Canoe rafting isn’t like rafting: here, you’re the one steering. Our state-certified guides paddle their own boat right beside you and teach you to read the river, stop and manoeuvre, and even how to swim and position yourself if you end up in the water.
🌊 The Dranse offers playful, accessible rapids, a great spot to learn the ropes of white-water navigation.
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 And since everything happens at the base, from kit to shuttle, all you have to do is paddle, good mood included.

FAQ

What’s the difference between canoe rafting and rafting?

The canoe raft, nicknamed the “hot dog”, is a small two-person inflatable raft, more technical and more athletic than a classic raft. Instead of paddling as a group with a guide on board, you steer as a pair, with a state-certified guide in their own boat.

Is canoe rafting dangerous, or harder than rafting?

It’s more technical and more physical, since you steer the boat yourself. The trip is still led by a state-certified guide, with a wetsuit, life jacket and helmet, after a full briefing.

What’s the minimum age for canoe rafting, and do I need experience ?

From age 14 (depending on water levels), as long as you can swim, feel comfortable in the water and are in good health. No previous experience is required: your guide explains everything before you set off.

How long does a canoe raft trip last?

Allow about 2 hours in total, including 1 to 1 hour 15 on the water. Departures are at 9am, 11am, 1pm or 3pm.

What should I bring for canoe rafting ?

Just swimwear and a towel. We lend you the wetsuit, neoprene boots, life jacket, helmet and paddle.

How do I book canoe rafting near Thonon-les-Bains ?

Call +33 4 50 71 89 15 or email leman@takamaka.fr. You meet at the Féternes base.

When can I go canoe rafting, and what happens in bad weather ?

The season runs from early May to late September, depending on the Dranse water level.

Can I get photos of my descent ?
